A628 Dodworth Bye-pass

The A628 into Barnsley from Dodworth
(Penny Pie Link)

The new Labour council have employed consultants to investigate the possibility of an new alternative road in to Barnsley Town centre.
This has primarily resulted from the Re-thinking Barnsley study and Will Alsops idea of a tree lined boulevard on Dodworth Road.

This new road is intended to follow the Barnsley to Penistone railway line as far as Huddersfield road and will cause all kinds of problems.

  • Purchase and demolition of many properties
  • Decreased home valuation because of road proximity
(Some homes will have a road passing at bedroom window level)
  • Increased traffic to Summer lane and surrounding areas
  • Increased traffic to Huddersfield road and surrounding areas
  • The road will run in close proximity to the railway line (safety implications)
  • The road will be at a high level through most of it's path
(Traffic noise, Visual intrusion, Air pollution will all be a result of this)
  • The road is only single carriageway and will be grossly overloaded before it is
completed. Bypasses are notorious for creating extra traffic.

The council has not fully checked out the alternative solutions
